If someone comes and says: ” I offer you so much to work in my company.. but I will not give you internet?” how will 90% of the people react. “What the???”
One of the most favorite coffee/tea break topic is: why not internet at office? For freshers or even school kids this might look like crappy. They don’t even want to think about this. This thought of internet denial is more lame than lame itself.
But sadly, you don’t get internet at service based companies. ask me it is true. Service based companies are strictly NO NO to internet. It’s a big security threat for them. What if a careless fresher or even a developer with 5 years experience posts a piece of client’s code on google? or worse uploads the entire code which is business critical? This has happened in the past and people get jitters about internet access to everybody at every machine!
First thing I say about this thought is: What the @#$#? Why not google? how the hell will I write something without google? You are expecting me to remember the syntax of every piece of code? You want me to man everything? Do you expect me to go to those slow computer machines where our internet account is given?
I used to feel crappy when I was working in my first project. It was an NT enabled application. No MSDN. No internet. PM had no answer. I was fresh from college. I yearned for internet then! I was starved without internet. I suffered. Going through unnecessary junk of codes by doing Ctrl + F or search in the stupid Visual C++ 5.0. Legacy applications without internet and MAN pages is a nightmare.
Internet is already a fundamental right. One can use an iphone and get connected to internet! But, Why can’t one get that in the companies? Recession is the reason, business not doing good are the other lamest things they blabber about. Photon+ is setting trend with post and prepaid options for internet connections. Wifi connectivity is made available even in buses in some companies. Where there is a will there is a way!
Currently India is lagging behind China which has the largest user base for internet. They are catching up on technologies. Sooner or later we will have to catch up with our neighbours. Internet rates with decent internet speeds are quite affordable now. But, I can’t stop cribbing about what i have missed without google when i was in undergrad. The current generation are lucky to be updated with the ‘technical know hows’. Looks like generation gap is happening every 6 months!
I feel old. I come from an era where we used to pay 5 rupees to check our emails back in 1999s to 2002s. People who are passing out now are presenting awesome papers, are exposed to so many open source technologies, knows how to tweak xhtml, javascript. A 9th standard kid knows better java and pointers than us. “World is Scary without internet” is just an understatement.
Let me concentrate what this evangelist has to say on flex. I am so enjoying internet free will in college! I feel I have broken the shackles of internet denial!
